Such Men as These: The Story of the Navy Pilots Who Flew the Deadly Skies over Korea

The background for this well written book comes of course from The Korean War, a 'police action' never declared a war by Congress but most people refer to it as a 'war' all the same. Built into this background is the work that James A. Michener did while spending time aboard both aircraft carriers and planes collecting datum during the war prior to his writing the book The Bridges at Toko-ri. Later from his writings came two Hollywood movies, Men of the Fighting Lady and The Bridges at Toko-ri. The movies and the book were well received (even to this day) both by the United States Navy and the reading and viewing public. Late in his career Michener stated that he felt the best book he had ever written was The Bridges at Toko-ri.
I purchased a copy of this new book by Mr. Sears primarily for two reasons: I hold an honorable discharge from the United States Navy during the Vietnam era and I have been a lifelong fan of James Albert Michener. I have to agree with author Michener for I too feel The Bridges at Toko-ri represent his best work. Short, concise, but with a realism that jumps both off the page and movie screen. Similar things can also be said for Mr. Sears' new book, with title SUCH MEN AS THESE, having its genesis with Michener's book, The Bridges at Toko-ri. Of all the contents of Michener's book, the words "Where did we get such men?" spoken by Admiral Tarrant have always been ingrained in my memory.
SUCH MEN AS THESE is written by an ex-Navy officer, not an aviator, but we will not hold that against him! SUCH MEN AS THESE is a very fine book on many levels due to its offering several aspects of history, in addition to describing these mostly citizen pilots, abruptly, some would say unfairly, called back to active duty to become heroic combat pilots. Imagine being home with the wife and kids, working your job or profession after serving during World War Two, now only to be removed within days from all you have worked for during the last few years, finding yourself quickly back in a combat zone trying to stay alive on a day-to-day basis.
Mr. Sears sets the entire Korean War combat area and the U.S. Navy carrier operations before the reader, giving context and depth to both the political and military parallel activities. Names such as Truman, MacArthur, Syngman Rhee, Mao, Stalin, et al., pop up continuously with resultant explanations of the politics into the conflict. The maps are not many in the book but they are adequate, while the photos are more than adequate and the notes, glossaries, and appendices are far above average.
I read many books of a military nature and cannot overstate how well this book reads, its flowing style is of the best quality and meter. Due to the nature of the subject and the manner in which the author has connected the war, the political, and the writings of James A. Michener together in one neat bundle a reader can in all good manner call this a very unique book.
I have enjoyed reading the book over several nights and recommend it to all who enjoy a solid work of history, especially of a mostly forgotten war in that far away place called Korea. For those of us who grew up during this period, reading Michener's books, and later serving in the Navy close to these areas (serving in Japan for 25 months, I was in and out of Yokosuka several times). I say again, this is one fine, interesting work of non-fiction.

In 1951, James Michener went to Korea to report on a little known aspect of America's stalemated war: navy aviators. His research inspired novel about these pilots became an overnight bestseller and, perhaps, the most widely read book ever written about aerial combat.Using Michener's notes, author David Sears tracked down the actual pilots to tell their riveting, true-life stories. From the icy, windswept decks of aircraft carriers, they penetrated treacherous mountain terrain to strike heavily defended dams, bridges, and tunnels, where well entrenched Communist anti-aircraft gunners waited to shoot them down. Many of these men became air combat legends, and one, Neil Armstrong, the first astronaut to walk on the moon.Such Men As These brims with action-packed accounts of combat and unforgettable portraits of the pilots whose skill and sacrifice made epic history.

Although this dictionary is big, there are a significant number of terms I was unable to find that are important to instrument/commercial pilots - visual descent point (VDP), for example.
Seems to be more engineering/maintenance oriented because those types of terms are exhaustively covered.

If you're an aviation student, the Gleim series is necessary for success on written exams. I went through the Gleim - reading the introductions to the sections and answering the questions and passed my instrument written exam with an 83. That is the lowest score that I've heard of anyone who has used the Gleim books. The book contains the actual questions given on the FAA written exam. With each question - the answer and explanation is given. It's impossible NOT to learn using this book.

35 Miles from Shore: The Ditching and Rescue of ALM Flight 980 Review

35 Miles from Shore: The Ditching and Rescue of ALM Flight 980
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It has been more than 37 years since ALM flight 980 ran out of fuel and was forced to ditch in the shark-infested waters off the coast of St. Croix in the Carribean. When one stops to consider the thousands of commercial jet flights that take off and land each and every day all over the world it is all the more remarkable that what took place on May 2, 1970 remains to this day the one and only open-water ditching of a commercial jet in aviation history! Author Emilio Corsetti III is a both a professional pilot and a gifted writer. As such, he is a man uniquely qualified to scrutinize the facts surrounding this unfortunate incident that has long since faded from memory. "35 Miles From Shore" is the remarkable story of what went down on that stormy Saturday afternoon nearly four decades ago. Clearly this is an incident worth looking into and a story worth telling. "35 Miles From Shore" is a book that will grab your attention right away and hold your interest until the very end.
It is important to note that the service between JFK in New York and the island of St. Maarten had been inaugurated just a few months earlier in a joint agreement between the official airline of the Netherlands Antilles ALM and the U.S based carrier Overseas National Airways. Under this arrangement known as a "wet lease" ONA would provide the aircraft, pilot and flight crew and ALM would provide the flight attendants. Under the terms of the agreement hammered out by the CEO's of the two airlines installation of an extra fuel tank was deemed necessary and this tank was to be installed on the aircraft by no later than April 1st, 1970. Both ONA CEO Steedman Hinckley and ALM president Ciro Octavio Irausquin were keenly aware that the existing fuel tanks on the DC-9 were probably inadequate for a flight of this distance and left the pilot precious little margin for error. Failure to follow through on this committment would prove to be a major factor in the eventual ditching of this aircraft. Author Emilio Corsetti III does a workmanlike job of examining this tragedy from a number of different perspectives. Through a series of interviews with the pilot and crew, passengers, rescuers and investigators Corsetti has been able to cobble together a pretty comprehensive account of just went on that day. Pilot error was certainly a factor in this tragedy. In addition, torrential rains, gusty winds, extremely poor visibility and heavy seas would play a major role in the unfolding of this tragedy. All in all, a total of 20 people would lose their lives including stewardess Margareth Abraham. By all accounts Margareth and the rest of the crew and flight attendants performed heroically in preparing the passengers for what was about to take place. And it goes without saying that the lives of most who were lucky enough to survive would never be the same. This was especially true for Captain Balsey DeWitt who would never fly again.
I found "35 Miles From Shore" to be a well-written and meticulously researched book. I greatly appreciated the schematic of the aircraft that appears at the beginning of the book. I found myself referring to it again and again and this greatly enhanced my understanding of what was going on during the flight and in the moments immediately after the plane landed in the water. "35 Miles From Shore" also includes a 16 page photo gallery featuring 41 pictures which also help to bring these events to life. As another reviewer has indicated this is a book that reads like a novel but the events depicted here are real. A great book for general audiences and for those interested in aviation. Recommended.

On May 2, 1970, a DC-9 jet with 57 passengers and a crew of six departed from New York's JFK International Airport en route to the tropical island of St. Maarten, but four hours and 34 minutes later the flight ended in the shark-infested waters of the Caribbean. It was, and remains, the only open-water ditching of a commercial jet. The subsequent rescue of survivors took nearly three hours and involved the coast guard, navy, and marines. This gripping account of that fateful day recounts what was happening inside the cabin, the cockpit, and the helicopters as the crews struggled against the weather and dwindling daylight to rescue the survivors, who had only their life vests and a lone escape chute to keep them afloat.

Great Book, tells of the everyday life of a U.S. Navy Piasecki HUP-2 Retiever Helicopter pilot and his experiences flying this Helicopter. THe pilot of the HUP-2 Retiever Helicopter had to concentrate 100% of the time in flight to the sounds the helicopter was making, The attitude the helicopter was in and flying the breifed mission. No auto rotation or auto pilot like the Modern Day SH-60 Seahawks have, THe HUP-2 Was all sight, sound, and feel, The Pilot was flying the helicopter 100% of the time. With a regular crew of just two. THe pilot in the left seat and an officer or enlisted crew member in the right seat, The pilot had little time to make written notes on his kneeboard and often had the other crewman write the notes for him. If a rescue was being performed the other crew member has to fold the right seat out of the way, open the rescue hatch(below the right seat), and operate the rescue hoist located above the right seat and the rescue door. There was no rescue swimmer in those days if the person being rescued could not climb in to the rescue sling, rescuee was most likely left for dead and the pilot would continue his flight. NOTE: THe rotor blades are Spruce wood with aluminum leading edges.
While Reading this book, I gained first hand knowledge of the Piasecki HUP-2 Retiever Helicopter by being a volunteer at the USS Midway Aircraft Restoration Hanger at NAS North Island. THe Piasecki HUP-2 the Midway got came from Edwards Air Force Base in July of 2009, and the volunteer artisans performed extensive work to make the HUP-2 a show quality museum aircraft. THe Piasecki is due onboard Midway in April 2011.

'Dan McKinnon, extraordinary helicopter pilot, brings alive the excitement and occasional terror of rescue at sea. An exciting hair raising and reverting tale of the largely untold story of helicopter resuces at sea' - Neil Armstrong, Astronaut. 'Just Great. It's going to be of tremendous interest to all naval helicopter pilots present and future and to the people who want to know more about this aspect of military flight. Boy, you've unleashed a flood of memories' - Bill Stuyvesant, legendary navy helo pilot. A daring Cold-War warrior recounts the thrills of high-sea helicopter rescue missions. Within the pages of "Rescue Pilot" distinguished naval aviator Dan McKinnon brings to life the dramatic at - sea helicopter rescues he participated in during his anything but peaceful 'peacetime service' in the United States Navy from 1956 to 1959.Helicopter flight itself, not to mention vertical-lift rescue and evacuation was in its infancy at that time, so pilots like Dan had to 'learn as they go', executing daring at-sea rescue missions from air carrier flight decks. Rough water, treacherous weather and risky cold-war conditions were all part of a day's work.Along with dramatic rescues, you'll participate in ship-to-ship replenishments, pick-ups and transfers, mine detection, and radar calibration operations. Dan also provides fascinating insider glimpses of peacetime naval life, long periods at sea, survival training, early helicopter technology, flight deck operation, and an incident-by-incident account of the U.S. Navy's involvement in the Formosa Straight crisis. In "Rescue Pilot" Dan McKinnon skillfully interweaves technical and historical information with his own thrilling real-life experiences ...and tells a story as only a man who has put his life on the line to save others can.

No punches are pulled in this gripping account of Vietnam combat through the eyes of a highly decorated Marine helicopter crewman and door gunner with more than three hundred missions under his belt.In 1968, U.S. Marine Ronald Winter flew some of the toughest missions of the Vietnam War, from the DMZ grasslands to the jungles near Laos and the deadly A Shau Valley, where the NVA ruled. Whether landing in the midst of hidden enemy troops or rescuing the wounded during blazing firefights, the work of helicopter crews was always dangerous. But the men in the choppers never complained; they knew they had it easy compared to their brothers on the ground.Masters of the Art is a bare-knuckles tribute to the Marines who served in Vietnam. It's about courage, sacrifice, and unsung heroes. The men who fought alongside Winter in that jungle hell were U.S. Marines, warriors who did their job and remained true to their country, no matter the cost.

A high glossy paper/photo book, this reads a lot like a manufactuers pamphlet...you will not find any criticism of the UH-60 in here. It's good, fast reading with many excellent color photos and details that would be very helpful to a modeler.
In 94 pages, the author gives you a brief overview of each version of the famous cargo helicopter of the US Army, the Black Hawk. I see this as a very enjoyable book for someone starting out with an interest in helicopters or as a supplement to other books that are more "nuts and bolts" or statistics and data oriented.
Affordable, nice to have on your bookshelf.

The Last Phoenix Review

I have always enjoyed Mr Herman's books and believed he had a good grasp of what he writes about.
However, being a Malaysian who currently resides in Singapore, I'm apalled at what I've read so far. Yes I'm only halfway through the book but am already wondering about whether to continue reading.
While it is a work of fiction, the factual errors in the book coupled with a poor understanding of Malaysia and Singapore has greatly reduced my opinion of Mr Herman.
He may be an ex fighter pilot and writes well enough about aerial conflict and the workings of the American political and military machine, Herman should have at least put some effort into making the bits about Malaysia and Singapore beliveable.
The Malaysian Army for example is one of the few forces in the world to have successfully put down a communist insurgency. The way he portrayed Malaysian troops makes them sound more like the Iraqi Republican Guards.
US Marines and Rangers regularly train in Malaysia and have acknowledged their professionalism. The Malaysian Armed Forces may not be quite ready to fight a major conventional war, but in the context of this book, they would undoubtedly more than hold their own.
It's fine if you're only catering to the American market who still think Malaysia is a country somewhere in the Carribean but for those of us here who appreciate good fiction, this is a poor effort.
Let's hope he puts more effort into his next book. And no, watching Ben Stiller's Zoolander is not enough if you want to know about Malaysia.

This book was so well written, informative & entertaining all at the same time that I was done reading it long before I wanted to be done!

Richard Kirkland is legendary for his P-38 Lightning missions in the South Pacific theater during WWII. After the war, he realized the potential of Igor Sikorsky's new flying machine, and he traded in his fighter-pilot wings for rotors. The nerve-racking chopper missions he has flown are the stuff of legend: scrambling to evacuate president Harry Truman after an unthinkable "code red one" alert comes over his red phone; bantering with the real "Hawkeye" at a MASH unit before flying into North Korea to rescue wounded soldiers. Equally riveting are his accounts of a medevac pilot in Vietnam who lands a ten ton CH-46 "Frog" in the jungle at night, with no lights, under fire, with only a soldier's cigarette lighter for reference; and an aerial tour pilot who routinely pulls people out of the water above, below, and right before Niagara Falls.

This is an excellent history written by an officer who played a central role in realizing the air-ground joint coordination essential to Rhodesia's lethal "Fire Force" operations against communist insurgents. It is also de facto a history of the Rhodesian Air Force before and after UDI. Lavishly illustrated and detailed, it is a must-have for any serious student of the war. Since titles on Rhodesia sell out and become costly to find when out of print, one would do well to purchase this sooner rather than later.

A unique account of one man's service in the Rhodesian Air Force, spanning a period of twenty-three years from 1957 to 1980 - through the politically turbulent years of Federation; the Unilateral Declaration of Independence (U.D.I.) by Ian Smith's government in 1965 and thirteen years of relentless, uncompromising bush warfare against the never-ending tide of Robert Mugabe's and Joshua Nkomo's ZANLA and ZIPRA guerrillas. In a grueling conflict that permitted no quarter, the Rhodesian Air Force (Rh.A.F.) fast became one of the Rhodesian Defence Force's most lethal and effective counter-insurgency organs. In pre-emptive bombing strikes against enemy camps in Mozambique, Zambia and as far afield as Tanzania; in its integral role as a troop-carrier and airborne strike force in 'Fireforce' operations; in working closely with such specialist units as the Selous Scouts, the S.A.S., the R.L.I. and the R.A.R., the Rhodesian Air Force was never far from the action and in no small way responsible for the astonishing military successes against a vastly numerically superior army. This all in spite of the international sanctions against Rhodesia, which ordinarily would have brought a nation's armed forces to its knees. However, forced by circumstances, the Rh.A.F. was obliged to maximize usage of its aging fleet of fighter-bombers, transports and helicopters and to resort to innovative techniques in terms of tactics and weapons systems, many of which were later adopted by the South African Air Force in its own counter-insurgency operations in Angola and Namibia in the '80s.
