for godsakes at least rewrite it well! The low-quality of the writing gets in the way of extracting any useful info from this book, and is downright confusing in many places. But what rips me more than anything else is that 95% of the material in this book is from your POH. The rest of it is inapplicable for US students or isn't particularly insightful. Spend some time with your POH and you'll get the official, updated info, straight from Robinson. The POH is well-written and 100% accurate.

Since I became a ground instructor in 2004, I used the William Kershner series (The Student Pilot's Flight Manual and The Advanced Pilot's Flight Manual) as the basic references for my ground school classes and individual tutorials. Getting my hands on volume 2 of the Pilots Manual series was an eye opener. The text is lavishly illustrated with useful color figures (in stark contrast the the Jeppesen GFD series) that mesh well and usefully with the text. Besides the good use of figures and diagrams, there are reasonably comprehensive end-of-chapter quizzes and other tools for the instructor and student. This text is well written, with a much more appealing layout than the Kershner series. The over all affect of the text gives the material a more appealing, approachable sense. Both technically an aesthetically well done. I highly recommend this as a primary teaching text.

Principles of Helicopter Flight Review

Principles of Helicopter Flight

This is an excellent book for the beginning pilot. You DO NOT need to have a prior knowledge of physics to understand this book. If you can read and follow diagrams, you can understand the book. The text is clear and concise as are the diagrams. It gives you a full and thorough understanding of a very complex machine.
If you have a hard time understanding this book you may want to reconsider piloting a helicopter.

Recently updated, this comprehensive handbook explains the aerodynamicsof helicopter flight, as well as how to perform typical helicopter maneuvers, unlike many aviation training manuals which are strictly how-to guides. Beginning with the basics of aerodynamics, each step of the process is fully illustrated and thoroughly explained—from the physics of helicopter flying and advanced operations to helicopter design and performance—providing helicopter pilots with a sound technical foundation on which to base their in-flight decisions. Containing discussions on the NOTAR (no tail rotor) system, strakes, and frequently misunderstood principles of airspeed and high-altitude operations, this revised edition also includes the latest procedures and regulations from the Federal Aviation Administration.

The ASA Test Prep provides a comprehensive review of the current (published) questions used by the FAA in their knowledge tests. The questions are conveniently organized into easy to digest chapters that include a summary explanation of the material followed by all the FAA questions pertinent to the subject -- complete with explanations of the correct answer to each question. Any student pilot preparing for an FAA knowledge test would benefit from an opportunity to review ALL the published questions prior to taking the test for two reasons: First, familiarity with the questions helps to quell the inevitable "test gitters;" and second, there are a number of tricky questions that need to be carefully reviewed in order to avoid OBVIOUS mistakes.
I used this test prep prior to ever taking a flying lesson, and I passed the private pilot airplane test with flying colors!!!

Private Pilot Manual Review

Private Pilot Manual
Average Reviews:

I am a professional airline pilot, and log virtually all of my time in large, turbojet aircraft. I am also a current CFI, although I don't frequently exercise my Instructor privileges in single engine aircraft. Not long ago I was approached to assist in teaching a Private Pilot ground school and to do some tutoring on the side. I accepted more for the challenge than any other reason.
The selected text for the course was the "Private Pilot Manual" by Jeppesen Sanderson, and I must say that I was very impressed with the book. It is very complete and provides easy to comprehend explanations (normally with useful diagrams, charts, or photographs) that make learning relatively painless. It was an excellent refresher for me as well, as single engine VFR flying is not what I do on a daily basis anymore. I highly recommend this book to CFI's for their students, to any Private Pilot or Private Pilot candidate, or to any advanced pilot as a refresher of the basics.
The only complaints I have heard from students are in regard to the relatively high price of the book. My response is that this one book contains the best explanations of the most important concepts needed to pass your written, oral, and practical exams before becoming a Private Pilot, and is an excellent reference to be referred to in the days to come. Flying isn't cheap. Economy is a good thing, but you need to know when to skimp and when to spend. This book is an excellent investment.

A Pilot's Guide to Aircraft and Their Systems (General Aviation Reading series) Review

A Pilot's Guide to Aircraft and Their Systems (General Aviation Reading series)
Average Reviews:

There are very little, if any, few diagrams and the explanations are given to you as though you already have a background with electricity and mechanical items. The sections you perceive to be full of information are probably only 3 pages in length. The diagrams are there to show you what the instruments looks like, but no indications on the diagram of how it would work. Not a book I would recommend to people who want to be in-depth about their systems and planes.

Pilot-oriented rather than mechanic-oriented, this guide to aircraft systems is designed specifically to help general aviation pilots understand how aircraft systems work so that they can better use them in flight. In order to operate modern aircraft in the manner that the designers and manufacturers intend, pilots must understand what each handle or knob controls and must know what to expect from each system when it is employed. The understanding that pilots gain from this manual will help them enjoy their flying more and make them safer, more efficient aviators.

Aerodynamics for Naval Aviators (FAA Handbooks) Review

Aerodynamics for Naval Aviators (FAA Handbooks)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Way too many pilots are making it through "professional" flight schools, a few years of instructing, into the commuters and finally into the cockpit of large jets with very little rigorous study of aerodynamics. With the emphasis on conservative training, electronic gadgets and such something is shortchanged and that is fundamentals of aerodynamics. This book is the answer as a text, instructor's aide and desk reference.
The product review infers that this is an FAA publication. Thankfully it is not. Rather it is the text that has lead generations of young Naval Aviation officers from diverse backgrounds into the cockpits of jet fighters operating off of carriers and many other forms of aviation. The preface and title page clearly indicate that it was written by Hugh Hurt (University of Southern California); Hurt notes "The purpose of this textbook is to present the elements of applied aerodynamics and aeronautical engineering which relate directly to the problem of flying operations." In this case the client was the Naval Air Systems Command and the book's mission was to provide the aeronautical knowledge required to transition from a liberal arts major to the deck of a carrier.
When I first bought this book I had been flying for several decades. My regret was that I had not read it earlier. Students who use the book in aviation courses will have a significant advantage in their training. It is a great resource book on all things having to do with how airplanes ( and helos) fly and sometimes do not fly.
Considering that the feedstock of Navy aviation is a diverse group with backgrounds from aero to poly sci and that the demands placed on the graduates are huge, it is not surprising that this book was produced. It does a fantastic job of discussing concepts and then providing the math (most of it far beyond my ability) and graphs. However, the lack of a background in calculus does not prevent the reader from gaining priceless insights into the physics and practice of flying.
Yes the photographs are dated and of planes long sent to the boneyard but the physics of flying have not changed since the earth cooled. In fact, with the current crop of flight instructors so affixed to their digital displays, most civilian students will need to study aerodynamics on their own. Want to understand why Mooney aircraft have so many bent props on the 231/252 series, just spend a few minutes wiht the applied problems in aero and some of the basics.
For me the goal was not to understand every topic covered, but to add to my knowledge base, especially as it relates to the type of flying I normally do, and to have an excellent reference. With that goal this book is great. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
The author's success is evident in many ways but perhaps most in the fact that after more than four decades it is still the text of choice in many rigorous academic and professional training programs. If I had to pick two books to give a student pilot it would be Richard Bach's Stranger To The Ground and this book. I have also recommended this book to several of my instructor friends as an aid to understanding what they are teaching.

Fatal Traps for Helicopter Pilots Review

Fatal Traps for Helicopter Pilots
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First off, the idea of dissecting accidents to learn what/what not to do is a great idea and something that rotorcraft pilots definitely miss out on--Whyte should be praised for taking the initiative to do this. On the downside, too much of the book is just raw accident reports (or Whyte's summary of them) that offer either the most basic details or minutiae that makes sense only to the manufacturer's engineers. At some points it's frustrating to read through these not knowing where they're going, or trying to understand technical details only to end a chapter without getting any insight from them. Whyte could have vastly improved this book by taking the time to cut through the crap in these reports and focus on the details relevant to the point he's looking at, although the page count would have been much smaller...
On the flip side, the value in this book comes from:
1/ It is specific to helicopter flight and operations
2/ Whyte's sorting thru all the accident reports that illustrate all the bad stuff you read about in your training. In addition, some (but not all) of the illustrations and explanations go far beyond what you'll find in other books (eg, the FAA's book), making it a good complement for what you'll need during your training. For example, Whyte's book has the best explanation of VRS/SWP that I've seen.
I would have liked to see more focus on R22-specific issues (the SFAR 73 accidents) and a chapter on personnel safety at landing sites would have been a nice addition. Operation-specific hazards (eg, long-lining, operations over water or dense forest), discussion of the relative risks in different ships, and an analysis of how a situation could have been averted or recovered would have made this book a grand slam. Don't get me wrong, all student pilots should read this book at some point in their training, but I hope Whyte will significantly improve the content in later editions.

Flight Theory and Aerodynamics: A Practical Guide for Operational Safety, 2nd Edition
Average Reviews:

This text offers an algegraic approach to basic aerodynamics, air craft performance, plus limited coverage of helicopters. The chapters are now managebable for use in a college level introductory aerodynamics course primarily geared toward flight students, in any of the new emerging college curriculum. The book's organization has improved significantly over the first edition. The text is easy to read with good practical examples but there is a level of sophistication above most of the other aerodynamics texts geared for pilots. Practicing aviation professionals will also gain from use of this text. In short, I would say that the book is ideal for college level aviation programs and practicing aviation professionals.

Certified Flight Instructor Oral Exam Guide: The Comprehensive Guide to Prepare You for the FAA Oral Exam (Oral Exam Guide series)
Average Reviews:

Like all the other books in the ASA Oral Exam Guide, the CFI book is a pretty good source for oral exam material. Also, in common with the other ASA guides, this one includes several Q&As related to specific, although unspecified aircraft (the Commercial exam guide was far worse in this regard). By this point though, anyone using the book should be able to recognize these questions and know the correct answers for the airplane that they are going to use for their check ride. Good, solid review, but not perfect. It is the most comprehensive single book on the market for oral prep: Give it a go, but supplement it with a review of all your other materials.

Commercial Oral Exam Guide: The Comprehensive Guide to Prepare You for the FAA Oral Exam (Oral Exam Guide series) Review

Commercial Oral Exam Guide: The Comprehensive Guide to Prepare You for the FAA Oral Exam (Oral Exam Guide series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Mr Hayes' guide is a fair and generic review for oral portion of the commercial (single-engine, airplane) checkride and covers required equipment (91.213, MELs), restrictions on flying for hire (part 91 vs 121), and general info on complex airplanes. The Gleim book has a more thorough coverage on regulations and maneuvers.
Any guide like this should be a supplement to a review with your CFI. Most examiners have particular areas they wish to emphasize -- usually based on previous applicants or trends from the FAA/NTSB inspectors.
Where this book is deficient, and this is largely because the nature of the commercial rating, is its description of advanced systems. This is because for the commercial, you take part or all of your checkride using a complex (retractible gear, cowl flaps, controllable pitck prop), airplane. The seriousness of the rating requires that you know a *lot* about the aircraft. Successful applicants will bond with the pilot operating handbook, as well as "memorize" the placement of every gage, knob and instrument.
For the purposes of review, Mr Hayes assumes you have a Cessna 172RG, which is not a bad guess as it's among the cheaper and more ubiquitous training retractible airplanes available. He does a good job covering the basics of the 172rg differences (hydraulic landing gear, cowl flaps and prop). To his credit, he makes an attempt at including suggested power settings for the maneuvers. (Unfortunately, these will only be approximations, you have to try them in the plane you're going to do the exam in.)
