This is an excellent book for the beginning pilot. You DO NOT need to have a prior knowledge of physics to understand this book. If you can read and follow diagrams, you can understand the book. The text is clear and concise as are the diagrams. It gives you a full and thorough understanding of a very complex machine.
If you have a hard time understanding this book you may want to reconsider piloting a helicopter.

First, let me state that I was very disappointed to see a reader render such a terrible review for a terrific book. While I admit that the book is not what I would consider as an academic or scholarly researched reference, it is an impressive work by a individual who played a key role in communicating this history to the world during the Apollo era. I can't fathom giving a 1-star rating to such an excellent work.
Don Blair was aboard the recovery ships and witnessed first-hand the recovery process. He had numerous interactions with key personnel responsible for the recoveries and broadcast 5 splashdowns. His book is really a personal memoir of his experiences, with wonderful personal photos, documents that include ship menus, and numerous other interesting artifacts. There are numerous rare personal photos including Neil Armstrong inside the MQF playing a ukulele following their historic mission. In addition, it is the first time a photo has ever been published of the prime UDT recovery team of Apollo 11 (UDT-11 and UDT-12). He also showcases numerous personnel often overlooked in the more commercial books on the Apollo Program. I would almost liken his book to browsing through a personal scrap book of photos, news clippings, and other memorabilia.
Don's book fills a historical gap too often passed over in a variety of books chronicling the Mercury-Gemini-Apollo missions. I think it is an excellent book and consider it required reading for those conducting a serious study of the history of manned spaceflight. I believe that most historians will agree that Don's book has a permanent place on the Apollo bookshelf.

Way too many pilots are making it through "professional" flight schools, a few years of instructing, into the commuters and finally into the cockpit of large jets with very little rigorous study of aerodynamics. With the emphasis on conservative training, electronic gadgets and such something is shortchanged and that is fundamentals of aerodynamics. This book is the answer as a text, instructor's aide and desk reference.
The product review infers that this is an FAA publication. Thankfully it is not. Rather it is the text that has lead generations of young Naval Aviation officers from diverse backgrounds into the cockpits of jet fighters operating off of carriers and many other forms of aviation. The preface and title page clearly indicate that it was written by Hugh Hurt (University of Southern California); Hurt notes "The purpose of this textbook is to present the elements of applied aerodynamics and aeronautical engineering which relate directly to the problem of flying operations." In this case the client was the Naval Air Systems Command and the book's mission was to provide the aeronautical knowledge required to transition from a liberal arts major to the deck of a carrier.
When I first bought this book I had been flying for several decades. My regret was that I had not read it earlier. Students who use the book in aviation courses will have a significant advantage in their training. It is a great resource book on all things having to do with how airplanes ( and helos) fly and sometimes do not fly.
Considering that the feedstock of Navy aviation is a diverse group with backgrounds from aero to poly sci and that the demands placed on the graduates are huge, it is not surprising that this book was produced. It does a fantastic job of discussing concepts and then providing the math (most of it far beyond my ability) and graphs. However, the lack of a background in calculus does not prevent the reader from gaining priceless insights into the physics and practice of flying.
Yes the photographs are dated and of planes long sent to the boneyard but the physics of flying have not changed since the earth cooled. In fact, with the current crop of flight instructors so affixed to their digital displays, most civilian students will need to study aerodynamics on their own. Want to understand why Mooney aircraft have so many bent props on the 231/252 series, just spend a few minutes wiht the applied problems in aero and some of the basics.
For me the goal was not to understand every topic covered, but to add to my knowledge base, especially as it relates to the type of flying I normally do, and to have an excellent reference. With that goal this book is great. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
The author's success is evident in many ways but perhaps most in the fact that after more than four decades it is still the text of choice in many rigorous academic and professional training programs. If I had to pick two books to give a student pilot it would be Richard Bach's Stranger To The Ground and this book. I have also recommended this book to several of my instructor friends as an aid to understanding what they are teaching.

My first impression when I opened the book was really positive. A great number of drawings, diagrams and pictures with text inbetween. The introduction still sounds very aimed and sympathetic. I learned better making my way through the first pages about stability - very dry with lots of graphs and aerodynamic sophistry that I won't ever need as an avionics technician. Later flowchart diagrams presented more questions to me than they would answer when using them with the text as intended. Some portions are very theoretical. I missed pratical examples for some of these scientific statements and explained systems. Well, I think I picked up some usefull things but wouldn't recommend the book for hands-on people - rather for the more theoretical guys that won't ever have to change a wheel.

If you are in senior airline management and are wondering why things happen the way they happen and you really can't figure out why, this book might provide some help. It's the first step towards understanding the human impact in airline operations, be that pilots, cabin crew or ground crews. Far from being an expert in the field I think this work provides great background material, probably to be better understood when you hold a degree in psychology, but also readable for the un-initiated like myself. CRM specialists/trainers, Human Resource Managers etc. should have this book on their shelv(es).

This is an unusual book with an unusual title, posing a startling question which might never occur to a typical reader -- why don't airliners use the wing-flapping strategy evolved by nature and employed by ancient pterosaurs as well as modern birds, bats and insects? The book's subtitle, "Flying Animals, Flying Machines, and How They Are Different," foreshadows the author's intent to take the question seriously and provide an answer supported by an interesting and wide-ranging discussion drawn from the contrasting (but conceptually related) worlds of biology and aeronautical engineering.
Prof. Alexander, an entomologist by profession, organizes the book into ten chapters dealing with flying animals vs. flying machines, opposing gravity with lift, overcoming drag with thrust, the complex problems of turning and manuevering, the role of the tail, the human need for flight instruments, the art of soaring, vertical takeoff and hovering, predation and aerial combat, and unconventional flight as embodied in ornithopters and human-powered aircraft. A seven-page Epilogue delivers the author's "bottom line" response to the query contained in the title.
The main narrative is enriched with many technical details, historical anecdotes, and bits of biological and aeronautical ephememera which help keep the reader interested. Good quality line-drawing illustrations supplement the text throughout. The material on helicopters, human-powered flight, and ornithopters is more extensive than usually found in popular aviation literature, and of course the author's professional expertise in natural flight lends depth and authority to his analyses of aerial locomotion by insects and animals. I recommend this book to anyone wishing to acquire a broader knowledge of the problem of flight as solved first by nature herself and again (much later) through the intellectual efforts of Earth's most intelligent species to date.

Richard Whittle began covering the V-22 Osprey program in 1984 as the Pentagon correspondent for The Dallas Morning News. Based on hundreds of interviews, extensive research, first hand flights, and an "embedding" on the first Osprey combat tour in Iraq, Whittle's book, The Dream Machine: The Untold History of the Notorious V-22 Osprey provides impressive insight into the internal and external politics of fielding the Marine Corps' "Number one aviation priority."
If you are looking for a technical discussion of the V-22, or a critical assessment of its combat capabilities, or cost-benefit analyses to a conventional helicopter, this book is not for you. Rather, this book is for members of the general public who automatically associate words like "death trap" and "widow maker" with the Osprey.
Neither unrealistically extolling the aircraft's virtues nor carping on capabilities for which it was never designed, the story focuses on the struggles to convince the Army, Navy and Marine Corps that tiltrotor technology was mature enough for development, to design an aircraft to meet the overly-constrained JVX government specification, to maintain support and funding within the Department of Defense and Congress for three decades, and to survive the tragic crashes in 1992 and 2000. Indeed, Whittle has written the first in-depth look at the history of the Osprey that tries to cut through the hype and the hysteria that has surrounded the V-22 for over a quarter century.
Written in a journalistic style, the book covers much of the history of the development of the aircraft, and follows the careers of several key individuals. As a result, although there are hundreds of individuals mentioned at Bell and Boeing, in the Defense Department, Congress, etc, the reader gets a slice - rather than a comprehensive view - of the development challenges. The book reads well, despite a few editing shortfalls, and through Whittle's engaging writing style, the book is hard to put down.
Despite the seemingly pejorative title, Whittle's story is largely a positive one of the trials, tribulations, tragedies and triumphs of the Osprey. Webster's gives the definition of `notorious' as "generally known and talked of; especially widely and unfavorably known." An unfavorable view of the tiltrotor is still probably the "conventional wisdom" among the American public, helped by "60 Minutes" and Mark Thompson's appallingly misguided October 2007 TIME magazine article, "V-22 Osprey: A Flying Shame" - perhaps the low point of journalistic coverage of the Osprey. Whittle's book may serve as a counterbalance, providing enough factual information on the Osprey for readers to draw their own conclusions on the aircraft. An alternative title might have been "Chasing a Dream: The V-22 and How It Got That Way." In fact, Whittle seems to go out of his way trying to incorporate the views of some critics, but in the end, it was a bit unconvincing for me, because the preponderance of the book refuted their arguments.
The retrospective of the entire Osprey development history provides some interesting insights - perhaps unintended by Whittle. For instance, the cancellation of the program by then-Secretary of Defense Dick Cheney - and the fits and starts of trying to continue the program through Congressional actions - are implicated in the July 1992 crash that killed seven at Quantico Marine Corps Base, and perhaps even lead to rushed developmental testing and the April 2000 crash that killed 19 at Marana. Cheney's cancellations certainly added years and hundreds of millions of dollars to the development; it wasn't until after the crashes that pauses could be made in the program to fix larger problems. Secretary of the Navy John Lehman's insistence on a Firm Fixed Price bid for Full Scale Development and the 50/50 partnership between Bell and Boeing (with neither company in charge) were also root causes of development troubles.
The book also highlights Representative Weldon's role in leading the defense of the Osprey in the Congress, where he formed the "Tilt-Rotor Technology Coalition." After the tragedy of the 1992 crash, Weldon testified that "in the past three years alone we have had nine accidents with the existing medium lift aircraft for the Marine Corps, most recently in March, where fourteen young Marines were killed when the CH-46 helicopter they were flying in went down."
Since its return to flight in 2002, the Osprey has flown well over 70,000 hours, including over 11,000 hours in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan. In March 2007, General James Conway, Commandant of the US Marine Corps, in discussing the Osprey's first deployment into combat is quoted as saying, "I'll tell you, there's going to be a crash. That's what airplanes do over time. We're going to have to accept that when it happens." The first combat loss of the Osprey occurred on April 8, 2010 (US time) - 10 years to the day from the crash in Marana - an Air Force CV-22 crashed in southern Afghanistan. The Dream Machine is dedicated to those "who lost their lives developing the V-22 Osprey, and to their loved ones and friends."

This text offers an algegraic approach to basic aerodynamics, air craft performance, plus limited coverage of helicopters. The chapters are now managebable for use in a college level introductory aerodynamics course primarily geared toward flight students, in any of the new emerging college curriculum. The book's organization has improved significantly over the first edition. The text is easy to read with good practical examples but there is a level of sophistication above most of the other aerodynamics texts geared for pilots. Practicing aviation professionals will also gain from use of this text. In short, I would say that the book is ideal for college level aviation programs and practicing aviation professionals.

Like all the other books in the ASA Oral Exam Guide, the CFI book is a pretty good source for oral exam material. Also, in common with the other ASA guides, this one includes several Q&As related to specific, although unspecified aircraft (the Commercial exam guide was far worse in this regard). By this point though, anyone using the book should be able to recognize these questions and know the correct answers for the airplane that they are going to use for their check ride. Good, solid review, but not perfect. It is the most comprehensive single book on the market for oral prep: Give it a go, but supplement it with a review of all your other materials.

Mr Hayes' guide is a fair and generic review for oral portion of the commercial (single-engine, airplane) checkride and covers required equipment (91.213, MELs), restrictions on flying for hire (part 91 vs 121), and general info on complex airplanes. The Gleim book has a more thorough coverage on regulations and maneuvers.
Any guide like this should be a supplement to a review with your CFI. Most examiners have particular areas they wish to emphasize -- usually based on previous applicants or trends from the FAA/NTSB inspectors.
Where this book is deficient, and this is largely because the nature of the commercial rating, is its description of advanced systems. This is because for the commercial, you take part or all of your checkride using a complex (retractible gear, cowl flaps, controllable pitck prop), airplane. The seriousness of the rating requires that you know a *lot* about the aircraft. Successful applicants will bond with the pilot operating handbook, as well as "memorize" the placement of every gage, knob and instrument.
For the purposes of review, Mr Hayes assumes you have a Cessna 172RG, which is not a bad guess as it's among the cheaper and more ubiquitous training retractible airplanes available. He does a good job covering the basics of the 172rg differences (hydraulic landing gear, cowl flaps and prop). To his credit, he makes an attempt at including suggested power settings for the maneuvers. (Unfortunately, these will only be approximations, you have to try them in the plane you're going to do the exam in.)

Mr. Raymer has managed to explain a very complicated process in a way that is both understandable and interesting. Conceptual aircraft design (i.e., starting with nothing but a set of performance criteria to be met) is a multi-variable problem in which the value of most of the variables depend on other variables. The solution of such problems require initial approximations with subsequent iterations. Mr. Raymer explains the conceptual design process, gives historic values used for first approximations and makes good use of actual examples. Two conceptual designs, one a homebuilt aerobatic aircraft and the other a supersonic fighter, are provided in the Appendix to illustrate the procedures described in the book. I found the book interesting both in subject matter and writing style. Although written as a college textbook, the use of actual aircraft to illustrate various points and the author's obvious desire to be precise about his descriptions makes the book easy to follow and fun to those interested in the subject.
