(More customer reviews)"I have been reading SF since about 1970, when I was ten years old, having inherited a bookshelf of the greats - Heinlein, Herbert, Azimov, Bradbury, Vonnegut, etc, when my family moved in to a new house. Since then I have devoured just about everything in most of the genres that have populated the print and electronic worlds as they have matured along with the realities of hard science. I have also been a fan of conspiracy lit, be it templar, illuminati, or of the X-Files sort. In the last year, as a result of having an iphone and discovering [...], I have started consuming more and more SF from the `unknowns' and `unsigned' which have been showing up with a greater frequency, and the fact of the matter is:
The Day of The Nefilim is one of the best SF novels I have read since I began reading.
Maybe that's just because all of what I have read until now provided the knowledge and context to appreciate the depth of David's work, which didn't allow me to put it down until I finished it. Straight through, in one sitting. Yeah, that's right, I did not put the book down until I finished reading it. Couldn't. Well done David. Keep writing. Can't wait to read your next book... Consider the world that would exist if the best of the New Age theories were true. All the hippy, pseudo-nazi new-ageisms like the ascension, 12-strand DNA, the photon belt and the three days of darkness... imagine that they're all for real, and not just an excuse to fill the shelves of those irritating shops that have crystals and those feather dreamcatcher things in the window and smell of cheap incense. And imagine if those scrappy little pieces of quartz really did have all those properties? The implacable New Age... no matter how much common sense you throw at it, it just keeps coming...We can't forget conspiracy theories, of course. There really are Nazis on the Moon and at the South Pole. How could there not be? Plus the one-world government, the secret prison camps, Mount Weather, black helicopters and the deals with the aliens...Oh, the aliens... the Nefilim are around, and everyone from Sitchin to the Secretary-General of the UN knows that. There's Marduk (their home planet), the genetic manipulation of humanity, and the mutants that have survived underground for millennia... the Earth is riddled with underground catacombs. There's a whole world down there, populated with the detritus of the genetic program with which the Nefilim created humanity.The Nefilim are not only very much alive and well and waiting for their home planet to approach Earth, but the UN, that august body charged with the betterment of world peace and human rights while paradoxically being comprised of the world's governments and led by the planet's leading arms-producing nations, has got other ideas -"Let's use the threat of an alien invasion to justify the imposition of total control, and we can finally use all the wonderful measures we've been quietly cooking up for years." (There's an idea that would just have to be fiction.)... but you get the idea. How can so much stuff be true and life go on as normal?

Saving Cascadia: A Novel Review

(More customer reviews)In my opinion, in Saving Cascadia, John J. Nance has written another excellent thriller. As a professional geologist, I found his research on the Cascadia Subduction Zone to be authentic and believable. As a novelist who writes about some of the same subjects as John, both wildfire and earthquakes, I found Saving Cascadia to be a page turner - the kind you stay up with all night - fast-paced, suspenseful, brilliantly plotted, with realistically flawed characters thrown up against one challenge after another.

Fearful Symmetries: The Return of Nohar Rajasthan (Moreau, Bk. 4) Review

(More customer reviews)The moreau books can be read individually, but this is the only direct sequel in the series (so far). Picking up about 15 years after the first, things start off bad and only get worse. Swann seems to have a bit of a formula here, and his books are almost predictable in ther chaotic messiness, but you know what? It works.
My heart sank when I found out that my favorite part of the first book, Nohar and Stephie's love story, didn't make it. But the book was still next to impossible to put down. I read it and the first book in just a few nights and was exausted. The tension just sucks the life out of you. And if you thought the first book was intense (and painful), HA! You haven't seen anything yet. The punishment Nohar takes in this book is unreal. You practically have bruises just from reading it.
Secrets and people from the past emerge to make Nohar's life hell, and as a character I feel that he grows just as much here as he did in the first book. And while the future looks bleaker than ever, there still seems to be a ray of hope.

(More customer reviews)What I liked best about this novel was the images that Ballard was able to evoke. To be honest, I started reading it and lost interest. I picked it up some years later and was hooked. He truly can create amazing pictures in the mind unlike most writers. It is perplexing to me to see a book like The Firm getting such good reviews and being read by millions when this one is hardly even a footnote, when this book is superior in just about every way. It is not his best. I would say Crystal World, High-Rise and The Drowned World are his best, but this is a very original novel.

(More customer reviews)This second novel in the Area 51 series is another action-packed, suspenseful read. The story begins where the first novel ended. The familiar characters thought their problems would be over once they brought down Majic-12 and succeeded in averting disaster in the form of an alien attack; in fact, their problems have just begun. The "guardian" discovered under Easter Island has sent out a message into space, and very soon scientists detect a reply message coming from--ta da, the Cydonia region of Mars. This story starts a little slow, hampered somewhat by the need for the author to refresh the memories of those having read the first book. The message from Mars says the aliens are coming to earth with peaceful intentions, but Mike Turcotte, Lisa Duncan, Professor Nabinger, and Kelly Reynolds must determine if that is true. New alien sites are being discovered, with the two most important being in an ancient Chinese mountain tomb and in Africa's Great Rift Valley. Our heroes rush all over the planet, gaining access to the two main alien sites by way of some thrilling commando-raid actions. They get some assistance from an entirely new secret group called STAAR, a group even Majic-12 knew nothing about. Racing to get more information, our heroes must determine whether or not the aliens on their way from Mars are indeed the friendly ancient astronauts who helped save the earth thousands of years earlier or if they are members of the rebel group that mutinied against the ancient mission and remain intent on destroying our planet.
With this book, the standard type of government conspiracy ideas give way to novel new suggestions and possibilities. The reader joins the characters in trying to figure out who everyone is, who they are working for, and whether or not their intentions are peaceful. The addition of a new ultra-secret group beyond Majic-12 is complicated by the fact that the members appear and act differently than normal human beings. Some readers may not like the final few chapters because the reader is being constantly thrown back and forth between different events, but I felt this did much to add to the suspense of the concluding pages. I most enjoyed the description of covert forces activities; I have no way of knowing how true to life the author's descriptions are, but they do engross the reader in their details (especially when the inevitable major problems pop up to endanger the missions). After a slow start, the author really puts his hooks into you by the halfway point, making this a book you don't want to put down. It doesn't really matter that the whole future of earth is in the hands of a special forces officer, archaeologist, and political appointee of a President who is rarely heard from in the story, or that a lowly reporter has basic carte blanche access to the heart of the ultra-secret Area 51 headquarters. The author knows how to tell a story, and he continually injects mystery and suspense into a story that could easily have become stale in the hands of a lesser writer. Two books into the series, the story continues to grow even more interesting and enjoyable.

The Dragon Pool (Hellboy) Review

(More customer reviews)Take a folksy red demon, his ex-girlfriend, and a friend who prefers to live in water. Mix this with suspicious Chinese officials, and archeological dig in Tibet and the accidental awakening of a dragon that has been asleep for 1000 years, and you have most of the plot of The Dragon Pool. Archeologist Anastasia Bransfield knows that she is looking for the ancient temple of the Dragon King, who terrorized Tibet long ago until put asleep by a very angry dwarf, but she doesn't expect to run headlong into a tribe of the dragon's heir -- shape changing humans who have desperately kept the secret so that they would never have to resume sacrificing children. In the resulting confrontation she calls for help, and, just as you might expect, it's Hellboy to the rescue.
Being back around Anastasia puts Hellboy in a tizzy, but he gets to work and hammers out an arrangement with the local village (a rare moment of diplomacy for a guy who usually hits first, and then hits second). Unfortunately, the real damage is done. Even as Hellboy makes peace and saves the life of a young girl the bottom of the dragon pool shows unexpected signs of life. Soon the problem is a really cranky dragon trying to toast everything in the neighborhood. Despite help from both the BPRD and the Chinese government the dragon seems invincible, and the team is left digging for legends to find a way to set things right.
Chris Golden (noted for an unending supply of good horror and Buffy novels) once again does a great job of capture the action and Hellboy's somewhat sarcastic self-reflection. Hellboy is a human in most ways, but he is also the resident of a demon's body, with many unusual powers. Stacy and he still love each other, but the relationship is doomed not by their conflicts, but because the world isn't ready to accept the relationship. When your huge, red, and tailed, most folks tend to think the worst, and the couple must deal with the consequences. They are a good working team, though, and there's a great deal more action and fun than there are maudlin moments. One can't help but relish a pure occult adventure story like this. Go for it.

U.S. Special Forces: A Guide to America's Special Operations Units-The World's Most Elite Fighting Force Review

(More customer reviews)I would recommend this book to people who do not have a very good understanding of US Special Forces. For those of us who have a deeper knowledge of the Special Forces that our country employs, I would not recommend this book.
The book reads well and includes chapters on the Army Rangers, Navy SEALs, Air Force Special Operations (Combat Controllers and Pararescue Jumpers), Army Special Forces (Green Berets), Delta Force, Marine Force Recon, Army Airborne, Army 10th Mountain Division, Coast Guard Special Operations, and CIA Paramilitary Forces.
The inclusion of the Coast Guard "Special Operations" is a bit suspect as a special operations group, but that chapter is enlightening and informative.
The book does not go into very much detail on any of the special operations forces so I would only recommend this book to someone who wants a very general overview.
One of the major gripes that I had with the book (besides being overly simplistic) is on page 188. In the chapter about the 10th Mountain Division, the book mentions how a "young Lieutenant Bob Dole was badly wounded. After a couple years in a hospital he would go on to be vice president of the United States..." Umm, am I missing something here or was I asleep when Bob Dole was the Vice President?
Anyway, if you are a stranger to the world of US Special Forces, this is a decent book to get started. However, if one already has a pretty decent grasp of the subject, I would recommend looking elsewhere.

(More customer reviews)Bob Mayer (AKA Robert Doherty AKA Greg Donegan AKA Joe Dalton AKA Bob McGuire) is truly one of the more masterful newcomers to the sci-fi genre in many, many years. Intermingling sci-fi with edgy military techo-thriller action, Mayer weaves some of the most enjoyable and imaginative fiction I've ever read with each novel. I look forward to every book he writes and have yet to be disappointed. The Area 51 series has been one of the most exciting I've ever read and just when I thought it couldn't get any better, along came the Atlantis series, which is equally as good, if not better.
For those in the know about government secrecy on UFOs and the various black projects and secret operations that they have undertaken over the years, you'll find that Mayer truly did his homework on this series. Mayer name-drops numerous actual military projects from Operation: Paperclip to Project Aquarius as bits and pieces of a puzzle that the government has been piecing together since the accidental discovery of an alien mothership hidden in the Nevada mountains so many years ago.
From clues hidden in the most remote locations on Earth for thousands of years to new discoveries on the Martian landscape, the complex story continues to unravel the true origin of humankind and each subsequent saga is more fascinating than the last. Being a special forces trainer himself, the attention to detail as far as the military aspect in Mayer's stories is phenomenal as well. Bob Mayer is very quickly making a name for himself as one of the finest action authors of the modern age.
If the Area 51 series intriques you, be sure not to miss his Atlantis series (under the Donegan pen name) and his military thrillers such as The Omega Missile (Dalton pen name), The Gate (McGuire pen name) and Psychic Warrior (Doherty pen name). All smashingly good reads!!
