Judging from the book's title (and its price), you would expect to find a tight, well-written, authoritative work on technical rescue operations. Instead, you get newspaper clippings about Southern California disasters that you could get free over the Internet, some murky photographs that look like like rejects from an amateur's scrapbook, and WAY too many of the author's own "war stories". Here's what you DON'T get: a single detailed procedure, a single technical diagram, or anything that even remotely resembles a standard authoritative strategy for handling ANY type of disaster. I don't believe that the author wrote the book with any intent to defraud, but this volume has got to be the most audacious rip-off in the history of Search-and-Rescue education. Save your money, and do your staff a favor: buy ANYTHING besides this book.

Fire Flight: A Novel (Nance, John J) Review

(More customer reviews)I've been in the business of wildland firefighting and airtankering for more than three decades, and I'm darn proud of the image of my brethren that John Nance paints in this grand novel. Clark Maxwell and Bill Deason, if not psuedonyms for real airtanker pilots, represent the best among us, and the flight sequences are steller. So, for that matter, is the character development, and the depth of Clark's attitudes and opinions and struggles, especially where Karen Jones is concerned. I've known at least three Karen Jones in the smokejumper circles, and Nance's descriptions are dead on. I'm aware there are some rancid comments from one of my mad-about-everything fellow pilots posted here, but disregard his nonsense. This is great fiction against the background of the real deal, and you can take that from one who's been there. Recommend this to evryone you can. If they listen to this man, we just might get some things fixed in Washington!

(More customer reviews)Dean Siegman has done a masterful job of revealing the incredible life story of Charlie Morris. This book is heart warming and inspiring, but does not sugar-coat the harsh realities and struggles of someone dealing with both physical limitations and post traumatic stress disorder. Readers of this well constructed biography will almost certainly be inspired to do more with their own lives after learning of the remarkable achievements of Charlie Morris. A highly recommended read for anyone who believes the human spirit can overcome almost any oblstacle, for you will find no finer example of that notion than the life of Charlie Morris. This book is worth every minute of the time you will spend with it.

Just A Regular Guy is the story of Charlie Morris, growing up in Northern Ohio with the simple ambition to join the Navy, learn a trade, and raise a family in typical Midwest middle class fashion. His life took an abrupt turn when, in 1971 while serving in Vietnam, he was hit by enemy sniper fire while on a helicopter mission in the Mekong Delta. The result of his injuries was right side paralysis with the prognosis to spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair. Through hard work and determination Charlie was able to overcome his physical disability and eventually earn his college degree and begin a high school teaching career. Despite his physical limitations, his desire was just to fit into normal society without standing out from the crowd. His belief that life's hardest battles were behind him was shattered when the effects of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder invaded his life. This book tells the story of a man fighting numerous and diverse battles just trying to be a regular guy.
