Coast Guard and the Gulf Coast Hurricanes of 2005" delves into events at the response of the coast guard during this catastrophic event in 2005. Devastating New Orleans, and faced with some bumbled political action, heroes were made as the Coast guard rushed to save lives and lessen the damage to the region, and how these events still ring strong today. "In Katrina's Wake" is a thoughtful analysis of the event and the importance of the coast guard, highly recommended.

Secrets of Successful Aerial Photography Review

(More customer reviews)When purchasing this book, I was looking for a good source of information for someone interested in breaking into the Aerial Photography business. This book pretty much fit that bill exactly. It starts with three short chapters on atmospheric conditions and their effect on the image, and include tips on the best techniques for handling different situation.Chapters 4, 5 and 6 discuss equipment, film choices and exposure. Chapter 7 is about preflight planning. Eight covers aircraft recommendations, and then the book ends with some informatin on the business side of Aerial Photography, to include clients, marketing, pricing, sample forms, etc.Overall, this book addressed all of the topics I had question about, and it definately gave me enough information to get me started in the business. However, it was not quite as thorough or as detailed as I would have liked. It is not a comprehensive guide to aerial photography, and has left me with several questions on the subject. The bottom line is that this is a good book to have in your photography library and will be very usefull in conjunction with others. It also included a list of references where I plan on getting the answers to the rest of my questions.

Aerial: The Art of Photography from the Sky Review

(More customer reviews)As a person who is trying to "make it big" in aerial and aviation photography I would have liked a little more in depth discussion regarding the techinques he uses. Outside of that minor point, this book is stunning, the images are crystal clear, and the printing is very well done. Unlike many of us who use digital cameras, these images are mostly done on film and with medium format. Which is clearly evidenced by the level of detail he has managed to pull out.

Hawkes advises on how to take aerial photographs: how to chart small aircraft; basic flying rules; what equipment to use - film, filters, format, lenses and gyro stabilizing units to overcome vibration. He also discusses problems specific to this form of photography, including aircraft height restrictions, battery problems in extreme cold and safety issues.
